The ladder a good programme climbs
- Attention on you before any other skill.
- Position cues such as sit, down and stand, with a release word.
- Walking beside you without tension on the lead.
- Distance and duration for stay, added gradually.
- Proofing against doorbells, bikes, food and other dogs.
- Whether recall is practised on a long line near sheep, shoreline and seabirds.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Why does the order matter?
Each skill supports the next. A dog that cannot hold a sit will struggle with a stay.
Will my dog be perfect at the end?
No honest trainer promises that. You should finish with a working set of skills and a plan for keeping them sharp.
Can a programme be paused for holidays or illness?
Ask before you pay. Some trainers allow rescheduling and some do not.
Is recall near sheep realistic?
It can be built up, but keep your dog on a lead near livestock. No honest trainer promises perfection.
