the West Bay and East Bay beaches, North Berwick Law and the coastal path

The two bays are the heart of North Berwick for dog owners, and in summer both are busy with families, swimmers and picnics. Some beaches may have seasonal dog restrictions, so look for signs at the access points and check the council's pages before you go. A solid recall and a leave-it for picnics and dead sea creatures are among the most useful cues.

The harbour and rocks offer fascinating smells, and the tide can come in faster than you expect. Keep dogs away from slippery rocks and seaweed, and learn the tide times. Dogs that eat seaweed or drink seawater often get upset stomachs, so carry fresh water and discourage gulping.

North Berwick Law is a steep hill behind the town, with a path to the top and wide views. The grassy slopes often have sheep, and the climb is tiring for a very young or older dog. Keep to the paths, use a lead near livestock and take care on the steep sections in wet weather.

The coastal path along the shore is part of a wider network and is busy with walkers, runners and cyclists in summer. Seabirds nest on cliffs and offshore islands, and dogs should be kept well away from nesting areas in the breeding season. Winter brings sharp winds and short days, so reflective gear, a coat and a towel are sensible kit.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Are dogs allowed on North Berwick beaches?

Seasonal restrictions may apply on some beaches, so check the signs and the council's website for current rules.

Is North Berwick Law good for a dog?

Yes for fit dogs on a lead near sheep. The climb is steep, so it is not ideal for very young or elderly dogs.

Why does my dog get an upset stomach after the beach?

Drinking seawater and eating seaweed are common causes. Offer fresh water and use a leave-it on the strandline.
