Where dogs walk
the John Muir Way along the shore, the River Esk and the links

The shore beside Musselburgh is part of a coast where wading birds and seabirds feed and roost, especially in autumn and winter. Dogs that race over the sand and send flocks into the air cause real disturbance to birds that are trying to rest. A recall that works at distance, and a willingness to put the lead on when asked by signs, are the key skills.

The John Muir Way runs along the coast and is a favourite for long walks. The path is shared with cyclists and runners, and in places it narrows between the sea wall and the grass. A calm lead position and a quick step to the side keep everyone safe, and a long line is a sensible compromise on the open stretches.

The River Esk flows through the town, with paths along its banks and a mix of old stone bridges and weirs. Currents can be strong after rain, and banks are steep and slippery in places. A dependable "wait" before water and a leave-it for swans and ducks are worth teaching early.

The High Street is a busy shopping street with pavement cafés, and the weekend crowds can be large. A dog that stays calm beside a table, ignores dropped food and walks on a loose lead past other dogs is easy to live with. The wind from the Forth is brisk for much of the year, so an older or thin-coated dog may need a jacket.

  3. Pick one cue and repeat it every day on your usual walk around the John Muir Way along the shore, the River Esk and the links for a fortnight.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Do dogs need to be on a lead on the shore?

Signs and local rules vary, and birds are most sensitive in autumn and winter. Keep your dog under close control and follow any signs.

How can I stop my dog chasing birds on the sand?

Build a leave-it with toys, practise on a long line and reward your dog for checking in with you rather than running at flocks.

Is the River Esk safe for dogs to swim in?

It can be at low flow, but currents rise after rain. Keep a lead handy and call your dog away from steep banks and weirs.
