The loch beside the town is home to swans, ducks and other waterfowl, and the path around it is a popular circuit. A dog that dashes at the birds can cause serious disturbance, so a leave-it taught with food and toys is essential. Walk the path in quiet hours first and reward every glance away from the water.
The Union Canal passes through the town on its way across central Scotland, and its towpath is flat and easy. Cyclists, runners and boat crews share it, and it narrows in places, so keep your dog close and step to the inside when someone approaches. A recall that works near water gives you peace of mind on this route.
Beecraigs Country Park, in the hills to the south, has woodland, open grass and long trails, and it feels a world away from the High Street. Deer, rabbits and other wildlife are common, and in spring ground-nesting birds nest in the rough grass. A long line, a whistle recall and a quick leave-it make walks safer.
The long High Street is cobbled in places and lined with shops, cafés and busy pavements at weekends. Dogs need a calm lead position, a sit while people pass and an indifference to dropped food. The M9 and the railway add background noise, and cold winter winds can be strong, so some dogs appreciate a jacket.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I stop my dog bothering the swans?
Teach a firm leave-it, keep your dog on a lead near the water and reward it for looking at you rather than the birds.
Is the Union Canal towpath safe for off-lead dogs?
It is shared with cyclists and boats and runs beside water. Keep a close recall or use a lead on narrow stretches.
Are there country walks nearby?
Yes, including woodland to the south. Follow the Access Code, watch for livestock and nesting birds and keep a lead handy.
